Springtime means it’s Check Up Time!

Time to rediscover things that need to be fixed to prepare for summer time.

Change your A/C filter — Dirty filters make your A/C and furnace work harder!

It goes without saying that most of us already know that, but stop and think – when was the last time YOUR filter was replaced?

In addition to preventing proper airflow, dirty filters help eliminate bits of pollen and dust, mold and fungal spores, pet dander, fabric fibers, etc. that would otherwise circulate through your home and definitely lower the air quality.

Bottom line is this, clogged/dirty filters are the number one cause of HVAC system failure because the blower fan has to work harder to push air. When it’s working harder, it’s drawing more energy, leading to higher bills.  It’s also more likely to wear out from the strain.

So, when should you change your air filter

Change that filter at least once every one to three months, depending on the filter type!

This applies especially if you have pets or live in an area with high pollen levels. Filters are relatively inexpensive when compared to the major cost you could encounter if the dirty filter damages your unit. And, you can do it yourself – no professional needed for this simple task.

Of course, if you want Dusty to change it for you when he’s onsite making repairs or renovations, just ask!

Watch for information on these things, coming soon:

  • clean and repair gutters
  • check the roof
  • prepare for summer storms
  • clean your vents
  • repair your deck
  • improve your home security
  • check appliances
  • and much, much more

Custom designed transition flooring board to the rescue!

Flooring Transitions

Choosing the right types of transitions should be a simple task — just take a quick trip to any home improvement store, grab a board that looks good, and that’s that!
confused imageWell not quite! Recently, we spent what seemed an eternity trying to find just the right transition board to place between tile and a hardwood floor, only to decide there was absolutely nothing that looked like what our client wanted.

What’s next? Well, we decided there must be an old adage that goes something like this, “If it ain’t findable, make it yourself!” So, that’s exactly what we did and our client loved the custom design. See the finished flooring below.

Little Things Can Mean A Lot

The British poet Edith Sitwell wrote, “Winter is the time for comfort, for good food and warmth, for the touch of a friendly hand and for a talk beside the fire: it is the time for home.”

But, when it comes to the greater Ft. Worth region, we all know it’s sometimes hard to maintain the “warmth” part of her definition from January until Spring, and that’s where McCann Home Repair can make all the difference!

From caulking gaps in windows and doors to installing storm doors or switching out your thermostat to an energy-saving digital one, McCann Home Repair can help bring back that “warmth” to your home, and save you money on your utility bills at the same time.

In the meantime, below are some hints that you can do before you call us:

  • Get a draft stopper — anything from a rolled up bath towel placed at the base of your exterior door to one of these cute little guys that you can buy for around $25 – $40
  • Get your ceiling fans going in the right direction — Be sure the blades rotate clockwise during winter months. This will push the warm air from the ceiling downward to warm up your room.
  • Turn your thermostat down — When you plan to be gone for several hours, turn it down to about 55 degrees. Why waste heat when no one is there to enjoy it? Turning it down for 8 hours a day could save you as much as 10 percent of your energy bill during winter months.
  • Replace A/C / Furnace filters — Dirty filters prevent proper airflow and make your furnace work harder.
